We are so proud to officially publicize this first act of our project for PRIMARY SCHOOL.
Primary school is our representation of diving headfirst into the creative journey and expressing yourself through creation. The main themes of this project based itself in death and rebirth.
When it came to formulating what this project was going to be I had 2 ideas for things I wanted for sure. I wanted the color scheme to be red and the location to be decaying/destroyed (perfect for the fall time).
I brainstormed, set the location, chatted with the team, then got the clothes, and we were set! The shoot was underway. Truthfully the messages that I came to know from everything wasn’t even formulated until after all of the art was made.
There is this really cool 1915 silent film name ‘Hypocrites‘ that critiques society in a fun upfront way. Its main focus was really on highlighting the contradiction on a lot of the norms that are present in society. It focused on pointing out the hypocrisy of those that participate in said norms, like those that would tout modesty but still participate immodest action or politicians that preach on platforms of honesty but participate in nothing but deceit and corruption.
My mind took these ideas of hypocrisy a bit further, I feel that in the creative process we’re faced with nothing but change. A constant cycle of death, rebirth, creation, and death. When both are apparent at once I feel like you could say that it becomes hypocritical. You cannot be both alive and dead at the same time. Or can you…..
Looking back, this experience was to capture just that! The hypocrisy of life. Our locations dead, decaying, and forgotten about, but still some how breathing new life?
Our actions brought a new life to these spots for a brief moment but those too were ever fleeting, forever decaying. The photo was taken and the moment was dead and could never be returned to.
A picture catching the impossible, a moment of both life and death being exuded to its fullest.
But we didn’t just do this with photo alone. Darion made a song that really spoke to me for this project and I made a corresponding music video with it.
Mixing in clips from Hypocrites and the photo shoot I felt we showed the entire ethos of this first act beautifully.
A complete original experience for us to create and hopefully for you all to consume too!
Anyways we’ll see you with Act 2 when it’s ready.
